The Portuguese capital won first place for European on-a-budget destinations, according to the Post Office Travel Money City Costs Barometer.

The annual travel survey analyzes the costs for tourists in more than 30 European cities, and Lisbon proved to be the top-rated place for a quick city getaway, beating the traditional, and more budget-friendly Eastern European destinations.

The Portuguese capital overtook Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, and two previous winners such as Krakow (third) and Athens (fourth). The barometer's ranking is formulated by taking into account 12 typical tourist costs, including dinner for two, with wine, and drinks, two nights in a three-star accommodation, sightseeing, and city transportation.

This is the second time in the history of the annual travel survey that a Western European city beats an Eastern European city to first place.

The explanation for this is also due to the accessibility of the city itself. Lisbon is a walker's paradise, full of traditional old neighborhoods, museums, and beautiful viewpoints such as the Miradouro de Santa Luzia or Miradouro da Graça.

Explore the fantastic pastry of Pasteis de Belém - home of one of the world's greatest delicacies. For the more adventurous, Portuguese music - Fado - revives the concept of the old taverns, with mournful music, wine, and charcuterie. A perfect evening program to get to know what was considered World Heritage by UNESCO.

According to the Post Office Travel Money City Costs Barometer, here’s the top list of the best value city breaks:
